Was there a female pope? Pope Joan
CNN did a little video on Pope Joan and if there really was a female pope.
Whether or not there was, this gives a look into the Catholic Church, Middle Ages life and treatment of women historically.

China's Lost Girls--Documentaries
Netflix has this great documentary called "China's Lost Girls" by National Geographic that discusses the one child policy of China and the number of girls who are lost. The movie follows American families who want to adopt China's girls.
In the first 7 minutes and 20 seconds, it discusses the one child policy, Mao Zedong and the preference for boys.
By around 11 minutes and 30 seconds they discuss how the boy preference is much more severe in the countryside. They interview village men and ask "Why so many boys?"
Around 13 minutes, they interview a woman who had two kids and willingly paid the thousands of dollar fine for her second girl (she had a boy first).
At about 16 minutes, they talk about the problems of the boy and girl imbalance.

Malala's story
Malala first became famous as a teen blogger. At just 14 years old, Malala spoke up against the Taliban and began blogging about how girls should have more rights to an education.
In early October 2012 when Malala was on her way home from school in a van with friends, the Taliban came on to the bus and shot Malala in the head and neck. Two other girls were injured as well. Malala was sent to recover in the United Kingdom. When the Taliban was asked about the incident, they said that if Malala lived they would go after her again.

Who is behind Mona Lisa's Smile?
This is great for my Renaissance Unit!
Researchers are trying to find the model for Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa smile. They are looking for her remains.
Here is a video clip about it:
And here is a link to the article itself.

Party Convention: Ann Romney
Here is a video clip that shows excerpts from Ann Romney's address at the GOP Party Convention.
Good questions to ask for current event:
Does a presidential candidate's wife matter?
Ann Romney is considered Mitt Romney's "secret weapon." What do you think that is?
Should we only look at a candidate's political career or should we evaluate a candidate's family life as well?

Promises--Isreali/Palestinian Conflict Documentary
Promises is a documentary that shows the perspectives of Israeli and Palestinian children. They follow seven Israeli and Palestinian children who all live around Jerusalem.
Brad said that he viewed the movie in high school and in a Middle East college class. He loved it. I think if Brad could still remember the movie and the issues it looks at AND that it was shown to him in two different class that it is worth looking at.
This link takes you to a website that posts documentaries for free. It says that the documentary is available to watch on that website but I couldn't get it to work. Try back later.
